Special education is an umbrella term defined as the special instructions given to children with special educational needs that includes learning disabilities, communication disorders, physical disabilities, emotional and behavioral disorder at no cost to the parents to meet the children’s needs and differences.A special educator is a specially trained professional who works with children and youth who have a variety of disabilities aiming at addressing their individual differences and needs.

Children with disabilities require unique instructions that help them achieve a personal sufficiency level and success both at home and in school.In as much as the parents pay nothing towards the education of their children, it does not mean that they should leave all the work to the special educators. Parents support

Being involved

A parent can be an active participant in his or her child’s education journey. You can join in when they have trips staying involved in all that the child does.

Helping with supplies

This is mainly for parents who work and are committed elsewhere during the school hours. They can check with the school what they are running low on and donating the items. Tissues, wet wipes, hand sanitizers go very fast in the special education classroom.

Volunteering

This can be either during the school hours or after school. Know what is happening in school and be an active participant. Attend co-curriculum activities with your child to improve in socialization skills.

Communicate with the educator

Create a healthy relationship with the educator. Communicate with the educator how things are at home.

Make learning fun

As a parent, you are your child’s first teacher and can teach him or her in a way that their teacher cannot. Make every moment a learning opportunity be it out in the fields, learn nature, in the kitchen learn cooking.

Be supportive

Offer support to both the educator and your child. Avoid being judgmental. Whenever a problem arises, meet up with the teacher, and discuss everything with an open mind. For your child, be supportive and encourage him or her even when she or he has not accomplished anything.

Appreciate and thank the special educator

Appreciate that an educator’s role is to help your child achieve success. Surprise the educators with gifts, encouraging words, and take them out for treats. A thank you goes a long way to a special teacher.
