Patience is a weapon. Caution a virtue.
It is said, in Estonia, heroes are those who wait, watch and act only when the time is
right. In 1991, after nearly fifty years of rule by a brutal Soviet occupation, the small
Republic of Estonia, confronted their occupiers by announcing their independence to
the world. Their charge heralded the collapse of the Soviet Union and the freedom of now suddenly
former Soviet republics. And music played a pivotal role in these historical events.
“The Singing Revolution” tells the story of one country’s undeniable thirst for self determination
and its unshakable belief in what it means to be free — to be Estonian. A film by James and Maureen Tusty.

Happy Hour
Biddy Mulligan's
1500 New Hampshire Avenue, NW
Jury's Hotel (On Dupont Circle)
Washington, DC 20036
(202) 483-6000
[Map]
Estonian happy hour this Friday at Biddy Mulligan's Irish Pub, 1500 New Hampshire Avenue NW, Washington DC (north side of Dupont Circle). To get there, take the metro red line to the Dupont Circle station, bar is located across the circle from the south station entrance, two blocks south of the north station entrance. Parking is difficult in this area, but possible on some side streets.
We will be meeting starting around 6:30 pm, who ever gets there first can establish a beachhead. See you Friday night!
Cozily housed inside Jurys Washington Hotel on Dupont Circle, most of this Irish bar and restaurant's decor has been directly imported from the Emerald Isles. Earth-tone painted walls, wrought iron railings, and plush chairs give Biddy's a quieter, more upscale atmosphere than your average pub-around-the-corner. A seat on the patio or by the windows -- if you can snare one -- makes for great people watching. What's on tap? Guinness, of course, and a handful of other British and Irish beers. UK Classics like fish and chips round out the casual menu. --

Film: Autumn Ball (Sügisball)
AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center
8633 Colesville Road
Silver Spring, MD 20910
(301) 495-6720
[Map]
The first Estonian film to screen in competition and win a top prize at the prestigious Venice Film Festival, Autumn Ball is a new Estonian film that talks about six inhabitants of Soviet-era tower blocks whose lives touch together, and who are all united by a feeling of loneliness. The young writer, Mati, lurks outside the window of his ex-wife and unsuccessfully approaches other women. August Kask is a bachelor-barber living a drab life who takes to a little girl, but his approaches are misconstrued as pedophilia. The single mom, Laura, watches a sappy soap opera on TV and pushes away men’s advances because she cannot trust them. Maurer, the architect, thinks about the wellbeing of humanity, but has forgotten his own wife, who, in turn, looks for solace in the coatroom attendant Theo. Women like Theo, but due to his low social status, they don’t take him seriously.
Autumn Ball tells a tale of human seclusion and the incapability to reach others. But you also find humor and the absurd, and the properly attuned viewer might even find oneself laughing out loud.
Defined as a pitch black film comedy about loneliness, despair and hope.
Veiko Õunpuu, director, with main characters in the film played by Rain Tolk, Taavi Eelmaa, Juhan Ulfsak, Tiina Tauraite, Maarja Jakobson, Sulevi Peltola (Finland) and Mirtel Pohla.
Recorded Program Information: (301) 495-6700

Silver Spring, MD 20910-1438
[Map]
Estonia Seltsi Segakoor on ligi 50 hingest koosnev heatasemeline harrastuskoor, kes tegutseb Estonia Seltsi juures. Koor loodi 1993. aasta septembris. Samas võib Estonia Seltsi Segakoori pidada ka üsna vanaks kooriks, kuna tema loomine oli ühtlasi koori tegevuse taastamine Estonia Seltsi juures. Eelkäijaks on 1912. aastal loodud Estonia Muusika Osakonna segakoor, kus laulnud inimestest tuntuim on Gustav Ernesaks.Koori lauljate hulgas on nii muusikalise haridusega inimesi kui ka neid, kes alles n-ö töö käigus õpivad noote tundma. Vanuseskaala on lai – lauljaskonnas on olnud keskkooliealisi, vanim laulja läheneb 60-le.

Bowie, MD 20716
[Map]
This popular event celebrates different world cultures through food, music, and the arts. Entertainers, showcasing music and dance from around the globe, will perform on two stages. Vendors will offer a variety of international foods and crafts for sale.
Free children’s craft booths throughout the park will provide hands-on learning experiences about new cultures. Children can pick up a passport and collect visas as they travel “Around the World in Just One Day.” Whether they are making origami cranes from Japan or maracas from South America, the young and the young at heart will have fun learning about other cultures. At the end of their adventure, children can turn in their passports at the Event Information Booth for an international prize.
A Parade of Cultures is also planned for this year’s festival. This fashion show of sorts will highlight clothing and regalia from various parts of the world.

The
District ChopHouse & Brewery prides itself in serving some of the City's
finest handcrafted beers and dining fare: steaks, chops, seafood, oversized
salads and brick-oven pizzas are featured on the menu. Located in a warm,
cozy turn-of-the-century bank transformed into a "hopping" restaurant, the
Estonian Happy Hour congregates on the mezzanine level where one will find a
full service bar, hand-carved billiard tables and a cigar lounge equipped
with armchairs and sofas.
The Gallery Place/Chinatown (Verizon Center -- nee MCI) metro station is two
blocks away. When you come in, go to the back of the restaurant and up the
stairs to the bar area on the second level. While some may arrive early, the
majority don't get there until 8-9 p.m. If you are new to the Happy Hour and
don't know anyone -- ask the bartender -- he'll point us out for you! :-)

Park Bar & Grill (located in Cleveland Park) is the former Brick's Tavern
and is owned by Peter Balish and Jeff Holibaugh, formerly of the hot dance
club Vida, and Fabio and Patricia Beggiato, who run the
restaurant-cum-nightspots Sesto Senso and Andalu.
Filled with high, round bar tables and booths, the long
rectangular building, facing a heavy wooden bar and a row of televisions
mounted on the wall (15 in all); tables and more booths fill a smaller
dining area in the rear. The building's makeover brought a rich,
bordello-red paint job and a new display of artsy portraits of Washington
landmarks, including the Capitol and the Cleveland Park Metro station.
