Patience is a weapon. Caution a virtue. It is said, in Estonia, heroes are those who wait, watch and act only when the time is right. In 1991, after nearly fifty years of rule by a brutal Soviet occupation, the small Republic of Estonia, confronted their occupiers by announcing their independence to the world. Their charge heralded the collapse of the Soviet Union and the freedom of now suddenly former Soviet republics. And music played a pivotal role in these historical events.

“The Singing Revolution” tells the story of one country’s undeniable thirst for self determination and its unshakable belief in what it means to be free — to be Estonian. A film by James and Maureen Tusty.

Estonian Happy Hour
Biddy Mulligan's
1500 New Hampshire Avenue, NW
Jury's Hotel (On Dupont Circle)
Washington, DC 20036
(202) 483-6000
[Map]

Estonian happy hour this Friday at Biddy Mulligan's Irish Pub, 1500 New Hampshire Avenue NW, Washington DC (north side of Dupont Circle). To get there, take the metro red line to the Dupont Circle station, bar is located across the circle from the south station entrance, two blocks south of the north station entrance. Parking is difficult in this area, but possible on some side streets.

We will be meeting starting around 6:30 pm, who ever gets there first can establish a beachhead. See you Friday night!

Cozily housed inside Jurys Washington Hotel on Dupont Circle, most of this Irish bar and restaurant's decor has been directly imported from the Emerald Isles. Earth-tone painted walls, wrought iron railings, and plush chairs give Biddy's a quieter, more upscale atmosphere than your average pub-around-the-corner. A seat on the patio or by the windows -- if you can snare one -- makes for great people watching. What's on tap? Guinness, of course, and a handful of other British and Irish beers. UK Classics like fish and chips round out the casual menu. -- Ann Limpert (Photo: Dana Ellyn Miller)

Film: Autumn Ball (Sügisball)
AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center
8633 Colesville Road
Silver Spring, MD 20910
(301) 495-6720
[Map]

Film: Autumn Ball (Sügisball)The first Estonian film to screen in competition and win a top prize at the prestigious Venice Film Festival, Autumn Ball is a new Estonian film that talks about six inhabitants of Soviet-era tower blocks whose lives touch together, and who are all united by a feeling of loneliness. The young writer, Mati, lurks outside the window of his ex-wife and unsuccessfully approaches other women. August Kask is a bachelor-barber living a drab life who takes to a little girl, but his approaches are misconstrued as pedophilia. The single mom, Laura, watches a sappy soap opera on TV and pushes away men’s advances because she cannot trust them. Maurer, the architect, thinks about the wellbeing of humanity, but has forgotten his own wife, who, in turn, looks for solace in the coatroom attendant Theo. Women like Theo, but due to his low social status, they don’t take him seriously.

Autumn Ball tells a tale of human seclusion and the incapability to reach others. But you also find humor and the absurd, and the properly attuned viewer might even find oneself laughing out loud. Defined as a pitch black film comedy about loneliness, despair and hope.

Veiko Õunpuu, director, with main characters in the film played by Rain Tolk, Taavi Eelmaa, Juhan Ulfsak, Tiina Tauraite, Maarja Jakobson, Sulevi Peltola (Finland) and Mirtel Pohla.

Estonia Seltsi Segakoor

Estonia Seltsi Segakoor on ligi 50 hingest koosnev heatasemeline harrastuskoor, kes tegutseb Estonia Seltsi juures. Koor loodi 1993. aasta septembris. Samas võib Estonia Seltsi Segakoori pidada ka üsna vanaks kooriks, kuna tema loomine oli ühtlasi koori tegevuse taastamine Estonia Seltsi juures. Eelkäijaks on 1912. aastal loodud Estonia Muusika Osakonna segakoor, kus laulnud inimestest tuntuim on Gustav Ernesaks.

Vanuseskaala on lai – lauljaskonnas on olnud keskkooliealisi, vanim laulja läheneb 60-le.

Bowie International Festival
Estonian Folkdancers Pillerkaar Perform at 3:45 p.m.
Allen Pond Park
3330 Northview Drive
Bowie, MD 20716
[Map]

This popular event celebrates different world cultures through food, music, and the arts. Entertainers, showcasing music and dance from around the globe, will perform on two stages. Vendors will offer a variety of international foods and crafts for sale.

Free children’s craft booths throughout the park will provide hands-on learning experiences about new cultures. Children can pick up a passport and collect visas as they travel “Around the World in Just One Day.” Whether they are making origami cranes from Japan or maracas from South America, the young and the young at heart will have fun learning about other cultures. At the end of their adventure, children can turn in their passports at the Event Information Booth for an international prize.

A Parade of Cultures is also planned for this year’s festival. This fashion show of sorts will highlight clothing and regalia from various parts of the world.

There’s something for everyone at the 2007 International Festival. Check the City’s website at www.cityofbowie.org or call 301-809-3011 for the schedule of entertainment or for more information.

The rain date for this event is Sunday, October 7, 2007.

Admission to the Festival is free and parking is available (at no cost) in the park or on local streets.

The Gallery Place/Chinatown (Verizon Center -- nee MCI) metro station is two blocks away. When you come in, go to the back of the restaurant and up the stairs to the bar area on the second level. While some may arrive early, the majority don't get there until 8-9 p.m. If you are new to the Happy Hour and don't know anyone -- ask the bartender -- he'll point us out for you!  :-)

Cleveland Park Bar & GrillCleveland Park Bar & Grill (located in Cleveland Park) is the former Brick's Tavern and is owned by Peter Balish and Jeff Holibaugh, formerly of the hot dance club Vida, and Fabio and Patricia Beggiato, who run the restaurant-cum-nightspots Sesto Senso and Andalu.

Filled with high, round bar tables and booths, the long rectangular building, facing a heavy wooden bar and a row of televisions mounted on the wall (15 in all); tables and more booths fill a smaller dining area in the rear. The building's makeover brought a rich, bordello-red paint job and a new display of artsy portraits of Washington landmarks, including the Capitol and the Cleveland Park Metro station.

Cleveland Park Bar & Grill is Metro accessible, one block from the Cleveland Park Metro Station on the Red line.

This time we are moving back into Northern Virginia and meeting this Friday night, April 6, starting around 7 pm, at MISTER DAYS SPORTS ROCK CAFE.

Mister Days has been described as a raucous sports bar, with a clubby feel and more than 100 televisions, a place that is equally good for watching the game or members of the opposite sex. It is located one block south of the Clarendon metro station on the Orange Line to Vienna, entrance from N. Highland Street. Parking can be found on surrounding streets but as the evening progresses becomes more difficult. Paid parking is available for $3 across the street.

As a bonus, Hilevi Einseln will be deejaying at Mr. Days Friday night. We are hoping she can arrange for some esto drink specials, but we'll have to wait and see...

Washington, DC 20036

Sign of the WhaleThe Sign of the Whale has been described as "a comfortable (if shabby) watering hole that has served a generation of lawyers, lobbyists, interns and downtown professionals", a "rowhouse saloon with a mile-long wooden bar" that "feels more like a traditional British pub than the chains that have proliferated in recent years." Happy hour beer specials, pop music from the 70's, 80's and 90's, and an upstairs restaurant that specializes in hefty hamburgers are features. The closest metro stations are Farragut North and DuPont on the red line, about three blocks away, and parking is available on surrounding area streets, though difficult to find later in the evening.

See you Friday!

Description: Film and Discussion by Writer/Director Imbi Paju An award-winning historical and psychological Estonian documentary. Journalist and documentarian, Imbi Paju, tells the story of when her twin sister and her mother (born in 1930) were arrested in 1948 and interned until 1954 in Soviet camps. The film also recalls the many forms of oppression meted out to Estonians by both the Russians and the Germans, starting in 1939. The film reveals the difficulty in speaking about an unresolved past, and the courage that it takes the women and their nation to complete the journey of healing from the wounds of history. (Estonia, 2005, 60 minutes, subtitled).

After the film there will be a brief discussion and then informal group "get together" around town.

Annika on 2005.a H.Krummi konkursi laureaat.

Bariton Silver Lumi (s.1977) on samuti lõpetanud Eesti Muusikaakadeemia ooperilaulu erialal Rostislav Gurjevi lauluklassis. Vahepeal on ta täiendnud ennast Soomes Sibeliuse Akadeemias. Silver töötab hetkel Eesti Rahvusmeeskooris ning Rahvusooperis Estonia's. Samuti kuulub ta juba mitmendat aastat Savonlinna ooperikoori ridadesse. Aastal 2004 sai teda näha Rahvusooperis Estonia's; lavastatud muusikalis Vargamäe tõde ja õigus; Joosepi osas.

Embassy of Latvia, Washington DCJoin the Friends of the Baltics, Friday, September 15th at the Embassy of Latvia!

Come celebrate the Peace Corps' 45th Anniversary with the Friends of Baltics Friday, September 15th, 6pm-8pm at the Embassy of Latvia. Enjoy a Baltic-inspired evening of good food and drink, live music, camaraderie and libations with all proceeds benefiting youth-at-risk in Liepaja, Latvia. A cocktail reception hosted by the Embassy of Latvia will kick off the evening followed by a delicious buffet of regional cuisine. And, of course Latvia's best beers will be served among other cocktails and refreshments.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Maris Riekstins will give welcome remarks as we gather for a festive evening in one of the "newest" and most intriguing venues along Embassy Row. Another highlight of the evening will be a live performance featuring Sudrabavots, a highly-acclaimed, locally-based Latvian a cappella folk ensemble singing centuries-old melodies, many of which date back over 1000 years.

In order to reach our optimum fundraising goals for this very worthy project, the Friends of the Baltics is also holding a silent auction featuring a variety of treasures from the Baltics and beyond. We hope you can join us in supporting this worthwhile cause to benefit these often forgotten-about at-risk youth. If you are unable to join us, we hope you will consider making a donation. For those of you who will be in the area, you will not want to miss out on what is bound to be a most festive occasion celebrating the Peace Corps' 45th Anniversary in unique Baltic style. This event is not to be missed!

Immediately following this event, we will gather at the Brickskellar Bar (two blocks away) which serves the top beers of many of the Peace Corps countries of service! Everyone welcome!

Is Communism Dead? (Lecture)
The Heritage Foundation
The Heritage Foundation's Lehrman Auditorium
214 Massachusetts Avenue, NE
Washington, DC 20002-4999
[Map]

It is a grave moral failing of our age that the full extent of communism's crimes and victims remains dimly understood. How many know there have been more than 100 million victims of communism - a death toll surpassing that of all the wars in the 20th Century combined? How many are aware that a fifth of the world's population still lives, and not by their choice, under communism?

To serve as a permanent reminder of communism's inhumanity to man, an international Memorial to the victims of communism will be built on Capitol Hill - just four blocks from the U.S. Capitol. Ground-breaking is scheduled for September, dedication in June 2007, on the 20th anniversary of President Reagan's historic address at the Brandenburg Gate, when he declared, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"

In addition, organizations such as the Laogai Foundation, the Center for a Free Cuba, and the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation continue to educate the public about the continuing communist oppression and violation of human rights in China, Cuba, North Korea, Vietnam, and Laos. The Heritage Foundation has brought together an outstanding panel of experts to discuss the critical question, "Is Communism Dead?"

Speakers:

  • Frank Calzon, Executive Director, Center for a Free Cuba

  • Paul Goble (Formerly with Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and an authority on the Baltic States)

  • Harry Wu, Executive Director, Laogai Research Foundation

Host:
Lee Edwards, Ph.D.
Distinguished Fellow in Conservative Thought, The Heritage Foundation, and Chairman, Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation

Haydn Trio Eisenstadt with
Jaan Rääts from Tallinn, Estonia

Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts
801 Chase Street
Annapolis, MD 21401
[Map]

Haydn Trio EisenstadtKnown for their technical skill and sumptuous sound, the Haydn Trio Eisenstadt consists of pianist Harald Kosik, violinist Verena Stourzh, and cellist Hannes Gradwohl and in a special presentation, renowned composer Jaan Rääts from Annapolis' "sister city" of Tallinn, Estonia.

The program includes Mr. Rääts' Trio No. 2 and Trio No. 7. The trio also will perform Haydn's Trio in C major and Schubert's Trio in E flat major. Founded in 1992, the Haydn Trio Eisenstadt performs throughout Europe and makes a return engagement to Annapolis. Their 2003 visit helped inaugurate the World Artists Experiences’ debut season and represented the trio's first concert tour in the U.S. Mr. Rääts' lively and energetic style does not belong to any particular school of composition, but includes both neoclassical and contemporary elements.

Jaan RäätsJaan Rääts (born 1932) is one of Estonia's most often played composers. He is a professor at the Estonian Music Academy. Typical of his work is a seemingly neoclassical polystylism linked with contemporary compositional techniques. His works for piano (24 marginalia for 2 pianos, Sonata for 2 pianos, 24 Estonian preludes amongst others), music for chamber ensembles, several symphonies and concerts for various instruments and orchestra are among the most important and internationally recognized pieces. The chamber concert op. 16 (1961) by Jaan Rääts has been performed in over 25 countries (Germany, Russia, Israel, and by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in the U.S.A., etc.)

How are the changes reflected in ideas and practices regarding ethnicity, nationhood, and citizenship? Wealth, poverty, and free markets? Gender norms and roles? Memories and the writing of history? Cultural representations of the region in film, music, literature, and art? Click here for additional information.

Kell 20.00 kontsert - tasuta; kell 21.00 järgneb õpetaja Hannes Aasa ettekanne koguduse elavaks muutmise kogemustest Kanada Hamiltoni ja Eesti Kuusalu kogudustes koos slaididega nendest kirikutest. EELK Nõo koguduse meesansambel sai alguse 1990. aasta 25. märtsil, mil Nõo kiriku koorijuht Agnes Laasimer moodustas oma segakoori meeslauljatest nn meeskoori ning hakkas neile laule õpetama. Ansambli esimene ülesastumine toimus Nõo kirikus 8. aprillil Palmipuude pühal. Algusest peale võeti repertuaari osas suund peamiselt eesti heliloojate vaimulikule lauluvarale.

Ansambli viimase aja suurematest ettevõtmistest olgu nimetatud kontsertreis Rootsi Kuningriiki 2005. aasta suvel, kus esineti Lõuna-Rootsi Växjö piiskopkonna kirikutes.

Külmetava kunstniku portree

Baltimore, MD  21213-1514

[Map]

Külmetava kunstniku portreeEtenduse on dramatiseerinud kirjanik Mart Kivastik. Teda vääristati Eesti Kultuurkapitali poolt 2004. aaastapreemiaga – p.v. “Preemiad ja auhinnad”. Maalikunstnik Konrad Mägi oli erakordselt põneva elukäiguga Eesti kunstnik, kes on õppinud ja elanud muuhulgas Peterburis, Soomes, Pariisis ja Norras. Võrdselt tähelepanu väärib nii tema elu kui ka looming. Konrad Mägi eluloost võib leida kõike, mis oli 20. sajandi alguse boheemile tüüpiline, sh suurlinna juhuslikud armumängud koos oma pahupoolega. K. Mägi looming on omalaadne, lähtumata otsestest eeskujudest. Tänapäeval on Konrad Mägi maalid purustanud kunstioksjonitel hinnarekordeid. Nagu eespool juba märgitud, on näitemängu teised peategelased veel Amandus Adamson – kelle osa mängib Hendrik Toompere sen., Aleksander Tassa – keda mängib Sulev Teppart, Nikolai Triik’i osa kehastab Raimo Pass – kõik kaasaegsed näidendis on tolleagse Eesti kultuurielu tuntud tegelased.

Professionals in the City LogoEstonia: a world superlative! Discover Estonia and you will see it is phenomenal. Like Alice in her Wonderland, you will find there is even more to see in Estonia than you have dreamed about. The dream world becomes real and the reality is unbelievable. It takes no effort to grasp that rapid changes are taking place around you. Change means development, fulfillment, and a process of improving. Estonia's technological sector is thriving while the past - our history and nature - has been perfectly preserved. From untouched nature to post-modern city culture, you can experience solitude and the forces of masses. Big business and handicrafts passed from generation to generation stand hand by hand. Everything fits snugly together. Leave your passport at home and step into Estonia right here in the Nation's Capital!

Your Estonian Evening will include: dinner, drinks, entertainment, and more!  Click here for complete event details. (Please note there is a fee to participate in this event.)

Revolution of Pigs
Sigade revolutsioon (Second of two viewings)
AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center
8633 Colesville Road
Silver Spring, MD 20910
[Map]

Image Sigade RevolutsioonRooted in the memories and longings of its two directors and fueled by a soundtrack of classic pop, this exuberant look at youthful rebellion is set in 1986. In those days, the Estonian student summer brigades provided an annual rite of passage, during which hundreds of teens suffered through three days of camping and group activities. At night, they secretly released their repressed energy in disco and sexual exploration. However, Estonia in the mid-80s was a totalitarian state and the brigades were also used as a recruiting ground for the Russian army, then in desperate need of young bodies to fight its war in Afghanistan. When the counselors crack down on the campers, a group of dissenters performs a play called," Something's Rotten in our Country," setting the stage for a mass protest which quickly escalates out of control. Winner of a Special Jury Prize at the Moscow International Film Festival, the passionately inventive Revolution of Pigs cleverly blends teen comedy and political metaphor.

Coming from the land of the Kalevala, an ancient land of forests, lakes, small villages and epic songs, the Karelian Folk Music Ensemble is a trio from Petrozavodsk, in the Russian Republic of Karelia. Karelia is a region that encompasses both sides of the Finnish/Russian border and the ensemble's music is an exciting and interesting mix of Finnish, Russian and Karelian cultures. Their music ranges from the ancient epic songs accompanied by Finnish harps to a capella Russian village songs, from old shepherd melodies on wooden flutes and trumpet to Finnish dances on accordions, and from scythe accompaniment to church bells.

In case the flags hanging out front don’t give it away, Nimeta is the quintessential expat bar. At times it looks like something between a British stag party hangout and an expat boys’ club, but a good number of locals and backpacker types make it more interesting, especially on weekends when DJs get people into the dancing mood. A good place to watch sports and/or eat pub food.

Ando Kiviberg Concert
First Presbyterian Church

Annapolis, MD 21401
[Map]

Ando KivibergPiper Ando Kiviberg of Tallinn, Estonia, will perform a concert of traditional folk music at the First Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, April 12th, as part of Annapolis' Sister City program. He'll be joined by Kevin Brooks and Jefferson Holland of the Chesapeake Bay folk duo, Them Eastport Oyster Boys. The concert, which starts at 7:00 pm (ET) at the Church located at the intersection of Duke of Gloucester and Conduit Streets in Annapolis, will be followed by a reception featuring Estonian refreshments and wine. Admission is $10 per person, and tickets will be available at the door. Parking is available in the Hillman Garage across the street.

Kiviberg, who was awarded Estonia's National Culture Award in 2004 and the Fifth class Order of the White Star in 2001, will perform on the Estonian bagpipe known as a "torupill," which dates back to the 16th century. This common village instrument, considered essential for dances and especially weddings, where the piper had to take part in certain parts of the ceremony, had a bag made of the maw of a grey seal, with a wooden mouth-pipe, chanter and one or two drones.

The concert is made possible with a grant from the Maryland Baltic European Council, and will be produced in cooperation with Betty McGinnis, president and founder of World Artists Experience, based in Arnold. More information, please see the City of Annapolis web site www.annapolis.gov.
