Viljandi, the winner of the contest “Undiscovered treasures of Estonia,” organised by the Estonian Tourist Board, is preparing for a presentation at the 7th European Tourism Forum being held in Bordeaux, France, where exciting, but not yet very well known, European destinations will present themselves.
“We have formed a working group that includes people from the Estonian Traditional Music Centre, the Kondas Centre and the city government,” said Krista Kull, Public Relations Manager for the Viljandi City Government. The working group will develop a concept, on the basis of which Viljandi will be presented at the Tourism Forum. “Our presentation will definitely include an abundance of live music. We will also distribute several different types of printed matter introducing Viljandi,” said Kull.
In July, a French film group will come to Viljandi to shoot a reputation film about Viljandi, which will be shown at the Tourist Forum.
“Viljandi is taking the presentation of the city in France seriously and is thoroughly preparing for it,” said Tiina Kaarma, Project Manager of “Undiscovered treasures of Estonia” and Senior Consultant at the Estonian Tourist Board.
The contest for finding exciting, but not yet very well known tourist destinations, announced in January, received a total of 18 projects. The competition is related to the project “European Tourist Destinations of Excellence” (EDEN) of the European Commission, and was organised in Estonia, through the coordination of the Estonian Tourist Board, for the first time.
The specialist committee, established by the Tourist Board, selected the six most interesting sites from among the tourism sites submitted. The pre-selection committee of the contest visited all these sites and decided that the destinations presented by the Viljandi City Government, Põlva County Development Centre and Avinurme would be in the final round.
EDEN is a project launched by the European Commission in 2006, for the better utilisation of the tourism potential of Member States. Last year, 10 countries participated in the competition; this year, the number was 18, including Estonia.
