Estonian tax burden one of the lowest in EU

According to Eurostat and European Commission, Estonian tax burden is one of the lowest among the European Union member countries.
The largest falls in the tax-to-GDP ratio were recorded in Estonia, where the overall tax burden dropped from 35.1 pct in 1996 to 31.0 pct in 2006 and in Slovakia (from 39.4 pct to 29.3 pct).
The highest increases were observed in Cyprus (from 26.4 pct to 36.6 pct) and Malta (from 25.4 pct to 33.8 pct). However, tax burden is highest in Denmark and Sweden where the tax burden amounted 49.1 pct and 48.9 pct of GDP respectively.
The weighted tax-to-GDP ratio in the EU member countries increased to 39.9 pct in 2006.
